Facebook patents a system to know where we are going and when we will be disconnected
At this point we no longer have any doubt that Facebook wants to know us as best as possible, so we can show advertising that adapts perfectly to our tastes, beliefs, political ideas or where we live.
Thanks to BuzzFeed today we know that the company has patented a system that uses the data of our location to predict where we are going and when we will be disconnected.
Facebook says that "the patent does not mean that they are going to implement this technology"
Andy Harrison, spokesman for the company, wanted to make it clear that "they often look for patents for technologies that we never implemented." Patent applications, as in this case, should not be taken as an indication of future plans.
As we can see, the company tries to detract from the matter, assuring that this patent does not mean that they are going to implement this technology. Likewise, it is again evident that their interest continues to improve the tools that allow them to better know our habits and show us advertising as specific as possible.
In the middle of last month, a patent was also made public of a system that would allow them to analyze the members of a household thanks to Instagram data, previous messages, status updates, friendships, browsing history, relationships or photos.
Predict who we live with and where we will go when we leave the gym
Again, knowing who you live with offers Facebook a very valuable information to show you very specific advertising. In addition, thanks to an algorithm they are able to identify all the elements that are present in a photograph, and then compare them with data from another family member.
"Offline Trajectories" is a 2017 patent in which Facebook describes a method to predict where we will go (based on our location data).
The really striking thing about this new patent is that Facebook shows a system that could use the data of people we know and also of strangers to get to make those predictions.
To make matters worse, there is another patent (entitled "Prediction of Location Using Wireless Signals in Online Social Networks") which describes how they would be able to anticipate where we will go thanks to the strength of the signal from a Wi-Fi network , cellular, Bluetooth or NFC.
By having so much data about us (current location, time, day of the week, hours when establishments are open or the hours that more people go), Facebook could anticipate that we will surely head to a bakery when leaving the gym (something we may do often)
Although there is a way to limit the location data that we offer to Facebook, if we really want to prevent them from using them to show us advertising, perhaps the best option is to eliminate all the company's apps.
